Destroy Japanese ships heading for Dokdo | |

Roh Moo-hyun instructed the military to destroy unauthorized Japanese ships heading for Dokdo while in office, a close aide to the late President said Friday.
This indicates that President Lee Myung-bak¡¯s predecessor braced for the worst possible diplomatic relations with Japan to thwart the neighboring country¡¯s territorial ambitions of Korea¡¯s easternmost islets.
The revelation came amid escalating criticism of the government¡¯s stance of dealing with the issue in a low key manner.
Kim Byung-joon, a former senior presidential secretary for policy planning, said in an article posted on the Roh Moo-hyun Foundation¡¯s website, ¡°In April 2006, when Seoul-Tokyo relations were chilled by Japan¡¯s territorial claim of Dokdo, President Roh instructed his secretaries to consider destroying Japanese ships crossing into our territorial waters without permission.¡±
Among considered measures for destruction was using a Korean military ship to ram the targeted vessel from Japan, Kim recounted.
The former President also ordered the Coast Guard to brace for a ¡°worst case scenario,¡± he said in the article.
Japan has stepped up its claim to Dokdo in recent years. Located roughly halfway between Korea and Japan in the East Sea, the rocky islets have been at the center of a decade-long row between the two neighboring countries. The surrounding area is believed to be rich in fishing and undersea resources.
Japan¡¯s Coast Guard used to sail in waters off Dokdo in protest of Korea¡¯s ownership of the island. In April 2006, two Japanese boats with marine investigation facilities appeared in the waters off Dokdo to study the marine environment near the islets.
Seoul has maintained a 50-strong police contingent on Dokdo since the end of the 1950-53 Korean War to reinforce its ownership.
The late President was outspoken when it came to the issue, Kim said.
¡°He wrote public speeches on Dokdo on his own,¡± he said. In a special speech delivered on April 25, 2006, Roh declared, ¡°Dokdo is our territory which witnessed our tragic history,¡± referring to Japan¡¯s 1910-45 colonial rule of Korea. Nearly 95 percent of Koreans praised the declaration, Kim said, citing polls.
Roh, who served as the 16th president of Korea from 2003 to 2008, jumped to his death in May 2009 at the height of a bribery investigation. |
